Essential Door Installation Terms

The door frame is the structural border that surrounds and supports a door unit, consisting of the head (top), jambs (sides), and sill (bottom). It anchors the door to the wall and ensures proper alignment and function. A correctly installed frame is critical to preventing air leaks, water intrusion, and operational issues.
A prehung door is a complete door unit that comes already attached to its frame and includes hinges and often a pre-bored hole for a lockset. This type is ideal for new construction or full door replacements where the existing frame needs to be removed. Prehung doors simplify installation by reducing the need for custom fitting on-site.
A slab door refers to just the door panel itself, without a frame, hinges, or hardware. It is typically used when the existing frame is in good condition and only the door needs replacing. Installing a slab door requires more precise measuring and fitting compared to a prehung unit.
The door jamb is the vertical side piece of the door frame that the door panel closes against. It provides the surface where hinges are mounted and where the door latch or bolt engages the strike plate. Damaged or warped jambs can prevent a door from closing properly and may require replacement during installation.
The rough opening is the framed space in a wall where a door unit will be installed. It is intentionally sized slightly larger than the door frame to allow for leveling, shimming, and adjustment. A properly sized rough opening is essential for a secure, square, and functional door installation.
Weatherstripping is the sealing material applied around the perimeter of a door to block drafts, moisture, and outside air from entering the home. It is typically made from foam, rubber, or vinyl and is installed along the door jambs and threshold. Proper weatherstripping improves energy efficiency and helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures.
The threshold is the bottom component of a door frame that bridges the gap between the door and the floor surface. It creates a seal against drafts and water while providing a smooth transition between interior and exterior surfaces. Thresholds are especially important for exterior doors and should be inspected for wear during any door installation.
A strike plate is the metal plate installed on the door jamb where the door latch or deadbolt engages when the door is closed. It reinforces the jamb and ensures a secure, reliable lock engagement with each use. Proper alignment of the strike plate with the latch or bolt is essential for smooth operation and home security.
